This movie really got to me. It completely mastered the topic of unnecessary racism. I guess racism isn’t ever necessary but this movie reall shows how everything can spin out of control in a matter of minutes. It was interesting how the director really played with the montage and cinematography to really create the the mood and scene. The whole 3/4ths of the film is about creating the environment with an old fashion neighborhood feel. The director really makes you feel for the characters so that you not only feel like you are apart of the events that happen but the overall theme of the film.

So, let me just say that I was extremely disappointed that the library did not show up on Monday to open the door and play the movie. Although I had a very nice evening with Alex, I am annoyed that they did not do their job right and therefore we had to start the movie on Wednesday, giving us no time to finish it. Now the movie was very good. It totally surprised me on it’s subject matter. “Hustler” I thought was a term used to describe a drug dealer not a male prostitute. So that kind of threw me off. I really liked Rizzo’s character, Dustin Hoffman did a really great job. Joe and Rizzo really balanced another out and made you feel sympathetic to them both. They were both very sad characters and I don’t really understand why they didn’t just get dishwashing job. The naiveté of Joe’s character was extremely depressing because it seemed to be caused by a traumatic incident shown in flashbacks of a gang rap of him and his old girlfriend. The music was perfect for the film and the use of flashbacks in the montage gave the characters further depth. I look forward to renting this movie and watching it over and over for further analysis.

Two rides later, wearing my satin black heels, the girls and I got to the cobblestone streets of the Meat Packing District. Trying to copy a Sex and the City episode, we trotted through the crowds of nightlife aiming to get out of the cold street into a club. All we wanted was to get in somewhere and dance, an activity that would redeem the disappointments of our current relationship status. Not much to ask, but to the bouncers it seemed so. Frustrated and cold we walked through the trendy nightlife for only 21 plus, with only one goal that being to get into some place warm. I stepped in a puddle of icy brown water when we were trying to escape a peddler trying to take our photograph for money. Alas, we settled for the warmth of a diner, two hamburgers and a plate of macaroni and cheese. Feet hurting, still slightly wet, we caught a cab and made the trek back to Brooklyn, to the Pratt bubble. Now the Meat Packing District wasn’t always home to the young fashionable New York trendsetters but to 250 slaughter houses and packing plants in the 1900s. Nowadays New York is more catered towards real-estate and the service industry then to manufacturing as it was during the industrial revolution. But during the 1930s those that filled the warehouses that have been reciently converted into nightclubs and boutiques produced the nation’s third-largest volume of dressed meats. So what happen? During the 1990s there was a sudden switch in the crowds that would file down the streets. It started with the restaurants who moved in hoping to attract customers who would appreciate seeing a butcher hand deliver his slaughter to their cooks. It worked because once people started seeing the freshness of the restaurants quality the crowds started coming. It wasn’t long before the clubs and bars moved in and then the Gap and other commercial establishments. Those that once ruled the streets at 3 Am loading carcasses into delivery trucks still exist but in less an less numbers. Most of the plants moved to Jersey, like most of New York’s factories have. About 35 remain, dominating the streets during the day, allowing the pleasure-seekers to run and play during the night.

Mark Doty’s “Broadway” was my favorite poem in the set because it presented a particular message in a beautiful and coherent manner. The beginning of the poem is clearly about establishing the dismal scene of New York City. As the viewer describes the surroundings within the first stanzas, NYC is portrayed to be very negative, aggressive, and depressing. But what I like in particular is that Doty’s voice is very casual to the reader, as if he isn’t trying to impress or confused them. He is clear in establishing his main characters who he meets on Broadway on one dreary NYC night. The first we meet is a woman asking for spare change. The second is a poet named Ezekiel whom Doty had met earlier and given all his change too. Because he is empty handed when he meets the beggar, he simply embraces her hands in a sense giving her a different kind of valuable, that of love. The woman understands the gesture and leaves him with a thankful attitude towards his kindness. I believe the message of the poem is presented by Ezekiel’s character whom Doty meets prior to the beggar. Ezekiel did not ask for anything in return for his poem which emphasizes the value of love in bringing life into a city that seems to be lifeless. This message of reawakening love through acts of kindness is understood by Doty who then passes on this message through his actions towards the beggar he meets later. Had the poem been just Ezekiel’s poem, the reader might not have fully understood the importance of it’s meaning. By establishing a relatable incident, such as meeting two strangers, Doty’s voice in the poem has greater influence. It also shows that simply understanding Ezekiel’s message is not enough. Only by passing it on and following it’s teachings will reawaken love and therefore life back into New York City’s heart.

The bus pulls up to the only terminal. Welcome to Providence, Rhode Island, capitol of the smallest, most often mistaken as an island state there is. The first thing you see is all the ghetto people. Now when I say ” ghetto” it does not describe any particular race or look that you will be sure to see but just the motley soup of people that daily funnel through downtown Prov. Such a mix, feels almost like a big city, though people who live there no better. When I first moved to Providence, I hated it. Coming from Boston, this new city seemed to be so half-ass. I couldn’t understand that this small place was more then just a mall and a mile-long downtown area. It’s a city, don’t get me wrong Providence is what I would imagine New York being when it just started out. It has all the ingredients such as public transpiration, a club district, a few huge building including the enormous mall, and a state house littered with parks and trees. The population is totally flooded with diversity and the politicians have been known for be related to the old time Italian Mafia. When I came to New York after living 5 years in Providence, I was convinced that it would seem smaller then ever. It wasn’t until the first time I went home from school that I realized, the small city of Providence is home and that finally to me it’s big enough.

So class on Wednesday was interesting. We didn’t really get started with discussions until more then half-way through the class due the disappearance of a computer/projector cable. Though this time wasn’t necessarily intellectually productive we got to get to know our classmates a lot better. The group concluded that the time spent was worthwhile and the “bonding” we did was overall beneficial. Now we all know another a little better so it’s not weird to comment on another’s blogs. When the “substitute professor” returned empty handed we all just got physically closer and looked at the photography presentation she had prepared for us. As a photographer she had a wide knowledge of the photos that she drew particular inspiration from. It was interesting seeing pictures of old New York and it could be a fun assignment to take our own pictures of the City. I personally was somewhat restless because I wanted to look at everyone’s chosen urban artist. You would think that in a smart classroom such as ours that they would have put a box of cables for connecting computers to the overhead. I do hope we can present and have a large discussion on the research we did. And special thanks to Pratt for being so catering to both the students and teachers classroom needs. Where’s the cable Pratt?!?

The moment that we were instructed to post a blog about an artist whose work is influenced by a city, the only person who could adequately fit the assignment, was the man of NYC itself, Woody Allen. Born in Brooklyn, December 1, 1935 this Sagittarius is a 3 time Academy Award-winner, writer, actor, comedian and musician. Much of his inspiration comes from Marx, psychology, sexuality, literature, and most importantly New York City. When I think of NYC, Woody Allen is the first person who comes into my mind due to his continual use of the neurotic New Yorker character which is cause for both scrutiny and commencement of most of his work. After failing a film class, he was expelled from NYU and started writing for shows such as The Tonight Show at only 19. Although Woody Allen seems to piss many off with his use of satire and repetitive characters, he is still a man who defied the system of filmmaking and rewrote it. NYC to him is similar to how I see it, making him one of my all time favorite writers and filmmakers. Oh Woody…

It wasn’t the character Tim Levitch which made The Cruise have a pensive aftertaste but the way that Director Bennett Miller manipulates his fragile psyche. The fine line that seperates insanity from genius is blurred for Tim Levitch, a lovably pathetic NYC romantic. At first it seemed that Director Bennet Miller wanted to bring understanding to Tim Levitch’s personal outlook on himself, despite ongoing criticism and alienation for his eccentric behavior. The way Tim Levitchi was first documented was focused on giving an understanding to his obsession with NYC. To himself, Tim Levitch is not a poor loser, living alone in NYC but a man following his passion, helping enlighten tourist one Cruise loop at a time. I do not believe that Tim Levitch spoke with such eloquence in attempt to boast but that it is apart of his own self worth to be able to articulate his thoughts intellectually to a world that rarely seems to care. Instead of bringing light to why people should care for Tim Levitch’s character, about half way through the film, Bennett Miller further alienates Tim Levitch in the audiences eyes by revealing undesirable and/or unrelatable characteristics such as him being arrested for a unrevealed felony. Even the scene on the Brooklyn Bridge with Tim Levitch directly speaking to all the people that wronged him seemed to give his character a somber ambiguity. I felt extremely sad for his character and how Bennett Miller diminshed understanding of his perspective on NYC by focusing too closely on how different he is. Besides that I loved the character, the cinematography, and film overall but seriously sometimes directors are mean.
